Bangladesh Furniture Fair Opens with a Call for Innovation and Global Expansion

On Tuesday, October 14th, the official inauguration of the national furniture fair took place at the Rajdarshan Hall of the International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) in Dhaka. Inaugurated by the Advisor to the Ministry of Commerce, Sheikh Bashir Uddin, the five-day event aims to further develop the local industry and actively expand its export markets.

Currently, the domestic furniture industry is highly self-sufficient, meeting 100% of local demand while also exporting a significant volume internationally.

During his keynote address, Advisor Sheikh Bashir Uddin issued a constructive challenge to the sector, noting a concerning lack of functional and aesthetic innovation in current product lines. He emphasized that customers are turning away not due to pricing issues, but because of a deficit in creativity. He urged businesses to prioritize design and refinement, adding that while the government is implementing modern, supportive policies and exploring new free-trade agreements, the industry itself must drive innovation to succeed globally.

Providing broader macroeconomic context, the Advisor explained that the previous administration had created an "artificial economic bubble," leading to the unsustainable expansion of certain sectors without generating real employment. He defended recent contractionary policies as vital for stabilizing the economy, expressing optimism that a robust, investment-friendly environment will emerge by the end of this year or early next.

Echoing the call for strategic growth, Mohammad Hasan Arif, Vice Chairman of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), stressed the critical need for export diversification. While acknowledging the nation's heavy reliance on the garment sector, he highlighted the furniture industry's significant contribution to national employment. Arif urged manufacturers to move beyond internal competition and focus on capturing global markets through design excellence and superior product quality. He also revealed that the government is pivoting away from anti-export-biased policies and plans to prioritize the furniture sector in upcoming incentive programs to strengthen its global positioning.

Representing the manufacturers, K.M. Akhtaruzzaman, President of the Bangladesh Furniture Exporters Association, welcomed the government's renewed focus. He acknowledged the historical challenge of competing with heavily subsidized nations like Vietnam and China. However, with Bangladesh now slated to receive similar governmental support, he expressed confidence that the nation will achieve its goal of becoming a leading global furniture exporter within the next five years.

The expansive fair features 48 leading furniture companies showcasing modern designs across 278 stalls. The event spans multiple ICCB venues, including Gulnaksha and Pushpaguchchha (Hall-1), and Rajdarshan (Hall-3). Notable participating brands include Akhtar, Hatil, Brothers, Nadia, Ayat, Omega, JMG, Navana, Athenas, Partex, Regal, and Legacy. The fair is managed by the Design and Technology Center, in partnership with Access Infotech.
